General lighting is a well know term that describes the overall lighting in a room. Its purpose is functional and there are charts that recommend different lighting levels for different types of spaces. The measurement for this is Lux and a Lux meter is the tool used to measure the light levels in a room. It is recommended that Lux levels in living rooms and bedrooms should be about 100-200 Lux. And in a kitchen, which is more task orientated space, they should be slightly higher at about 250-400 Lux.
Of course, it’s not necessary for a residential homeowner to have a lux meter to ensure that the light levels in a room are suitable,
but just know that there is a scientific way to measure light. In buildings with specific uses such as laboratories, factories and commercial kitchens adherence to lux levels is essential. A professional consultant, a lighting engineer or designer, would be engaged to ensure this aspect of the design meets the Building Code’s requirements.
